Biographies of Other Children's Authors
Avi, who has gone by that name since the age of about one years old, was
born in New York City in 1937 and raised in Brooklyn. Even though he
struggled in school as a child, writing was important to his family and
subsequently it was also important to Avi. He seriously started thinking
about becoming a writer his senior year of high school. He started as a
playwright, and only started writing for children after having children of
his own. Avi has since written more than fifty children's books including
fantasies, adventures, comedies, historical fiction, mysteries, ghost
stories, and more. In 2003, Avi won the Newbery Medal for his book, Crispin:
The Cross of Lead.
Avi's advice to others, and especially writers is, "Listen and watch the world around you. Try to understand why things happen. Don't be satisfied with answers others give you. Don't assume that because everyone believes a thing it is right or wrong. Reason things out for yourself. Work to get answers on your own. Understand why you believe things. Finally, write what you honestly feel then learn from the criticism that will always come your way."
