Eoin Colfer Biography

Biographies of Other Children's Authors

Known worldwide for his ARTEMIS FOWL series, Eoin Colfer (pronounced "Owen") was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1965. As a former school teacher he used to read to his students for the last 10 minutes of class. If he could tell the students were getting bored with the story, he would often spice it up, adding bits from his own imagination to make the story more interesting. This led to him eventually making up his own stories.

A wide variety of works have influence Eoin's creation, including Huckleberry Finn, Sherlock Holmes, graphic novels and The Simpsons. Eoin say, “I’ve always collected comics – Batman is my favorite - and enjoyed the dynamic characters. I think children can cope with sophisticated humor.”

In addition to the ARTEMIS FOWL series Eoin has authored more than a half dozen other books. Before ARTEMIS FOWL made Eoin Colfer famous worldwide, the author's first children's book was BENNY AND OMAR, an immediate best-seller in Ireland. THE LEGEND OF SPUD MURPHY (a humorous chapter book) and THE SUPERNATURALIST (a middle-grade adventure) are just a few of the other books he has penned since ARTEMIS FOWL.

Nowadays when Eoin isn't touring the world meeting fans and promoting his books, he spends time in Ireland with his wife and their two children.
