Kid's Book Reviews - January 2002

Each month our young readers pick favorite books that they read in the past month and tell why they recommend it to other kids their age. This month's reviews include:

Island of the Blue Dolphins

Julie of the Wolves

The Toll Bridge Troll

Island of the Blue Dolphins

by Scott O'Dell

The book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, takes place on an island that looks like a fish sunning itself on the sea. On this island lives Karana, an Indian girl and her tribe. One day a strange ship comes to the island. The white men have come to take their tribe to another land. Karana and her brother, Ramo, are left behind. After Ramo is killed by the wild dogs, she swears she will kill all the wild dogs someday.

This is an awesome book. My favorite part was when she made friends with a girl named Tutok. She had come to the island with some people called the Aleuts. It was cool that Karana and Tutok became friends because the Aleuts were enemies of Karana's tribe.

Julie of the Wolves

by Jean Craighead George

Julie of the Wolves is about an Eskimo girl named Miyax (her English name is Julie) who gets lost in the Arctic. While she is up there, she finds a pack of wolves. It's cool because she finds out how to live with the wolves. She even figures out what they are saying and sometimes she can sort of talk back to them. When she is with the wolves, sometimes she plays with all the puppies. Most of the time there is one of all the puppies that she plays with the most.  I think this is a really good book.

The Toll Bridge Troll

by Patricia Rae Wolf and illustrated by Kimberly Bulcken Root

This is a funny book about a troll that won't let a boy cross a bridge to go to school. The troll says, "You can't cross my bridge unless you give me a penny." But the boy tricks the troll by telling him a riddle so he can cross. At the end the troll's mom makes the troll go to school with the boy so the troll can be smart like the boy.
