Kids' Book Reviews - July/August 2002

Each month our young readers pick favorite books that they read in the past month and tell why they recommend it to other kids their age. This month's reviews include:

A Single Shard

 Robin's Country

The Midnight Fridge

A Single Shard

by Linda Sue Park

This book is about a boy named Tree-ear who is an apprentice to a potter named Min. Tree-ear is excited to be working for the great potter, but he wants to learn to make a pot. Min won't teach him because it's the custom for potters to teach their sons pottery and Min's son died awhile ago. So, Min is really sad and grumpy.

I liked this book because at the beginning Min doesn't really like Tree-ear, but they become friends in the end. It was really interesting.

Robin's Country

by Monica Furlong

Robin's Country is about a boy named Dummy who lives with some very mean people. One night he escapes and accidentally falls into Robin Hood's camp. At first, they think dummy is a spy and Dummy isn't sure if he's any better off than before because of all the outlaws. I like it how even though some people think Dummy is a spy, he makes friends out of the outlaws.

The Midnight Fridge

by Bruce Glassman and illustrated by Brian Lies

In The Midnight Fridge the food in the fridge have a contest to see who is best. The egg says to the butter that he can't stand on his own and the pastries say protein is yucky. I like it when the food has a food fight. The pictures were funny.
